Syrian-Lebanese duo Kazdoura return with Markab, their second album and first release with Habibi Funk. Bringing Arabic musical traditions into an organic, groove-heavy band sound, the record draws together psychedelic and Anatolian rock, indie, jazz, Afrobeat and Gnawa.
Leen Hamo’s vocals and John Abou Chacra’s guitar, saxophone and flute carry Arabic melodies and microtonal phrasing over prominent basslines, live drums and warm analogue textures. Formed in Toronto in 2020, the pair first connected with audiences through Arabic classics before developing a musical language of their own.
Meaning “vehicle”, Markab reflects a period of confidence, curiosity and joy. Recorded in Victoria, British Columbia, and Toronto, its ten tracks explore homeland, love, social expectations and vulnerability alongside everyday pleasures and the possibility of moving forward. Eight original compositions sit alongside interpretations of the traditional “Ya Maria” and Elias Rahbani’s “Ya Nassini”.
Available on black vinyl and CD.
