Sublime Space Rock
I first heard this band at a gig in Oxford and was completely blown away. Their first album, The End of the Pier, was the kind of heavy guitar space rock that The Verve used to be good at - think Reprise from A Northern Soul - and the sort of music I've been trying to find for years. This second album is another cracker, with a greater emphasis on vocals: the first was almost exclusively melodic electric guitar unaccompanied by singing. Highlights of this second album include Boxing Day and Flyover, both beautiful and haunting songs that build to great climaxes. Buy this album, stick it on when you're chilling out, and let it take you far away.

By Wayne J. Guskind,

It really doesn't get ANY BETTER than this
The only reason I gave this album 5-stars is because that is the limit offered.

If there ever was a band that has gone criminally unnoticed, The Workhouse have to earn first prize. It is impossible to summarize what an outstanding record this is from start to finish and everywhere in between. It has it all - big sound / quiet moments / incredible musicianship / heartfelt lyrics. These guys are unquestionable masters of their craft - delving in and out of styles (like the Western tinge on Sellafield - just stellar) effortlessly. There are big rushes mixed such solitude that make you realize how special this music is. This is a total composition / music with such poise and purpose. The "world is truly a better place" because of The Workhouse.

The Workhouse take me away !
I have just purchased this after the NME review, this week, I'm a big Talk Talk fan and have been for too long to mention. I have to say that this lot have a mighty task on their hands if they are to be mentioned in the same breath as the mighty Talk Talk. So let's just say that I now own two Workhouse records, The End of The Pier and Fly Over.

I must admit that I'm not a Mogwai fan and have stayed clear of the first album, there's only so much, stop, start, loud, quiet, stuff you can take. So hat's off to The NME for bringing The Workhouse to my attention.

With a mixture of instrumentals and vocals, they bring a unique sound that litterly picks you up, puts you down, gives you a kicking and then makes you feel welcome again. Only for you to realise that you you were lost in the first place.

Pick of the songs to me is Coat Hanger and Fly Over, they pull on the heart strings just that little extra too much. I have played this album loud, just like the and mention in the album sleeve. It just makes the album better.

the end of our world as we know it
just had this from Amazon and it is amazing, so good I had to post this review ASAP. If you like your music with a story and a unhappy ending, then this is for you. I would say that this rates up with Talk,Talk and The Cure's finest moments. You know, you out the album on and you have then entered a place where you know that you're not coming out alive. Although saying that there are some great uplifting moments that make you feel on top of the world. I'll contradict myself if you may.

I got this bands first album from a Cure friend of mine and was pretty pleased, she had seen them and suggested that this lot were a bit deeper and moody live than the first album, well here's the result. I can't quite put my finger on their sound and would at a push say that if this was a super group it would feature Mark Hollis, Robert Smith and for that shiver down the spine effect, Mark Burgess. Need I say any more ?

Fly over

Picked this up from Amazon couple of weeks ago. It's dark, broody and made me feel totally uplifted.

The Workhouse have added to their debut album 'The End of The Pier' with a quite amazing follow up. Flyover is dark and takes no prisoners, reminds me of early Cure, 17 seconds and maybe Spirit of Eden by Talk,Talk. By this I mean it bears it's soul. Deep and dark. It starts with the positive 'Chancers' and ends with 'Look up at the stars' which is basically the final curtain. In between we have some amazing songs, Coma is short but sweet, Big Sam is as good as a sex song as you can get and and Flyover is quite disturbing. It starts with a pleasant enough start, but ends with a kind of 'Pornography' ending, twisted and ready for the next word.

This is a story from beginning to end, with enough, love, hurt and sex in between.

Only the strong survive.
