By Moshe Freedman,
Close but No Cigar.. is it worth getting??.... Important reissue notes :
While probably not the best Pretenders Album by far, some stand out tracks in here still make it well worth the buck spent if you're going to buy this on cd. Unlike the first 2 Pretenders reissued albums (Pretnders and Pretenders II) That were reissued as double cds packed full of rarities the approach to the next two pretenders album reissues was more hesitant and therefore some obvious choices as B-sides from the era (for example extended versions of 'Dance!', 'Tradition of Love' and 'Room Full Of Mirrors' for example were all used as 12" vinyl only B-sides and should have been included in the expanded package.
As for what Is included the demos are interesting as such, but if you already own the original release don't Hardly make it worth buying again
the Cd is reissued in the so called " mini LP sleeve" which is basically a cardboard fold that does not protect the cd well from scratches , not to mention the hassle of trying to pull the booklet out.
an even sadder mishap is the liner notes included in the abovementioned booklet which were written by Ben Edmunds who among other less important fact actually says that this album offered at the time of it's release great memorable tunes such as "My Baby" and "Thumbelina"
Huh?????
Thumbelina was not on the original album release it's a track from Learning to crawel and while a live version is included here you'd expect that the person chosen to write the liner notes will not make such an obvious crude mistake and furthermore you'd think whoever approved them for inclusion in this release will have read through them..
see for yourself it's write there in the booklet.
They also managed to not include the lyrics for "light of the moon" which oddly was included in the original booklet for the cd first issue, which all in all tells you something about the hurried nature of this release.
all in all a pretty half-assed job.
so *** for the album itself and a 1/2 * for the lame reissue package
